Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty, also known as “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen and may involve the repair of a bulge or protuberance in the lower abdomen that comes from weakened stomach muscles. This is a very common procedure after childbearing and in bodybuilders.
Who’s A Good Candidate For A Tummy Tuck?
The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is a healthy person who has excess skin and fatty tissue in the abdomen and weakened abdominal muscles giving the appearance of a bulge or a protuberance.
Specifically, good candidates for a tummy tuck are:
- Patients who have lost significant weight resulting in loose abdominal skin
- Patients with a bulge in the abdomen that does not change after exercise
- Women after childbearing who have weakened abdominal muscles even without excess fat
- Patients with controlled medical conditions that are safe for anesthesia
- Patients undergoing other body contouring operations such as arm, thigh lift, or breast procedures

Day of Your Operation
On the day of your tummy tuck, you will arrive at our surgery center and Dr. Mateo de Acosta will review the procedure and perform the surgical markings that will serve as a guide to address the areas of concern in your tummy.
In the operating room, you will then receive intravenous and tumescent anesthesia and the procedure will be performed with attention to the smallest details, ensuring a snug muscle repair and contoured waistline.
You will wake up in the recovery room with a compression garment, which Dr. David Mateo de Acosta recommends you leave in place for the first 48 hours. You will be allowed to shower on the second post-operative day and replace the garment. You will have 2 drains in your tummy, which you should expect to have for approximately two weeks.
Recovery After Tummy Tuck
Dr. David Mateo de Acosta performs the tummy tuck as an outpatient procedure, allowing you to return home on the day of surgery. Dr. David Mateo de Acosta will typically see you the day after the procedure to ensure you are comfortable and address any concerns or questions that may have arisen.
A compression garment must be worn through the day and night for the first four weeks, keeping the swelling to a minimum and ensuring your skin shrinks as desired. Dr. David Mateo de Acosta recommends early lymphatic massage to ensure you achieve the best recovery and results. Dr. David Mateo de Acosta will also recommend a trusted provider during your post-op visits.
Our experienced and knowledgeable staff will provide you with detailed instructions and guidance on your tummy tuck recovery following your procedure.
